What's actually true
Toyota has announced solid-state battery timelines repeatedly since 2010, pushing the date each time. Their current 2027 target is for "mass production" but Toyota itself clarified this means "a few thousand vehicles" — not mass-market scale. Manufacturing solid-state batteries at automotive scale requires solving the dendrite problem (lithium metal forms needle-like structures that pierce the solid electrolyte, causing short circuits) — a problem that has been known since the 1990s and remains unsolved at production scale. QuantumScape's test results use single-layer cells; a real EV battery needs dozens of layers stacked, which introduces interface problems. No company has demonstrated a multi-layer solid-state pack that survives automotive duty cycles. Lithium-ion continues to improve at ~5-8% per year on energy density and cost, moving the goalposts for solid-state. The technology is real but commercial viability at scale for automobiles remains uncertain and repeatedly delayed.
