What's actually true
AGI has no agreed-upon definition, making timeline predictions unfalsifiable. Frontier models (GPT-4, Claude, Gemini) remain narrow — they excel at text generation but fail at long-horizon planning, persistent memory, autonomous goal-setting, and reliable reasoning without hallucination. SWE-bench Verified shows the best models solve ~49% of real-world software engineering tasks autonomously. MATH benchmark performance is improving but models still fail on novel problem variants. The "scaling hypothesis" (bigger models = emergent general intelligence) is increasingly contested by researchers who point to diminishing returns from scale alone. No current system demonstrates the broad, flexible, self-directed intelligence that the term "AGI" implies. The timeline debate is more about marketing and fundraising than about measurable capabilities.
